What is Digital Perm?
Digital Perm is a new technique of creating shiny and bouncy waves to your hair which lasts between six and twelve months. Although Digital Perm is relatively new in the west, popularity is a phenomenon in Asia because of their strong desires for beautiful wavy hair. Digital Perm uses temperature-controlled rods that are regulated by a machine with a digital display. Hence, the name Digital Perm is created. Unlike a cold perm, Digital Perm is activated by heat to break down the molecules of your hair and rebuild them to mimic the shape of the rods. The solution used in Digital Perm contains proteins that recondition and repair the hair molecules by creating moisture when the heat is applied. Thus, the hair looks softer, smoother, and shinier after the treatment is completed.
Why is Digital Perm so popular?
Digital perm creates natural-looking shiny waves as if you have used a curling iron. This allows an easy way to prepare mornings without the constant struggle of styling and maintaining your hair on a day-to-day basis for at least six months or more. Who would not want to look fabulous with spending less time maintaining it, right? Even Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge is a fan of Digital Perm, along with the hottest star, Emma Stone!
Digital Perm vs. Cold Perm
Cold perm is a perm process that has been here since 1938. Digital Perm and cold perm can give you permanent curls, but the biggest difference is the shape and the texture of the wave. Generally, cold perm uses small and medium plastic curlers, leaving you with kinky to medium curls, whereas Digital perm creates big and soft curls with a sleek and polished look. Cold perm makes the wave most prominent when the hair is wet and loose when it is dry. On the other hand, Digital perm is exactly opposite as it makes the wave most prominent when the hair is dry and loose when it is wet. Thus, you can create a dry and curly look of the curling iron by just air drying it.
To-don’t list for Digital Perm
Although Digital Perm uses a much softer solution to create waves compare to a cold perm, if you have bleached, highlighted, and damaged hair, it would be best to wait and regrow your hair first. Also, if you have short hair, a cold perm would be a better choice. Because Digital Perm uses heat, it cannot be used near the scalp. Thus, spiral and small curls are difficult to create with Digital Perm. We also do not recommend this procedure to those who are pregnant or nursing a baby.
